FLOORCLOTH ARTIST KATHY COOPER

Kathy Cooper has been a full-time floorcloth artist since the late 1970's. Originally trained as a weaver, Cooper's career in floorcloths began quite accidentally when she found a piece of preprimed canvas in her Maine studio and decided to create a small rug for her home. Having read about floorcloths, but never having actually seen one, she applied her background in textiles and painting to her approach to floorcloths.

On a whim she took a few canvases to a local antique store and within the week her first sales gave her the money to buy more materials. While exhibiting at a craft show, a new store on Madison Avenue in New York City spotted her work and gave her the financial support to paint more. Cooper began to paint floorcloths full-time in her whimsical, colorful style. Since then Cooper has painted floorcloths for customers all over the U.S. and abroad. Kathy paints on Fredrix® canvas and uses it exclusively in her workshops.

Kathy Cooper became a pioneer in the revival of this lost art and developed a unique approach to the construction of her floorcloths. Her work has appeared in numerous magazines including Home, Southern Accents, House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home, Gourmet, Country Living, Woman's Day, and the cover of Where: Atlanta.

Her first book, The Complete Book of Floorcloths started a whole new trend in home decorating. As a result Cooper has been a featured guest on many home decor television shows including Home Matters, Decorating with Style, Interior Motives and Paint, Paint, Paint teaching segments on floorcloths. Her second book, Painting Floorcloths: 20 Canvas Rugs to Stamp, Stencil, Sponge & Spatter in a Weekend (Weekend Crafter Series) has shortened the floorcloth process so that anyone can make a floorcloth. Cooper's techniques are now available on video, Making Floorcloths with Kathy Cooper.
