SELECTING YOUR MATERIALSFredrix® has been making artist canvas since 1868, over 130 years, and offers the broadest range of professional quality canvas available to service every possible artist preference, including canvas for floorcloths. Fredrix® floorcloths and artist canvas products are available from fine art and arts & crafts stores everywhere. If your dealer doesn't carry the Fredrix® product you want, take a copy of this webpage and ask your dealer to place a special order for you. To create your floorcloth, here is a list of recommended choices and specific qualities which each one offers. Each canvas has its own characteristics. For your floorcloth you will need to consider how much time and space you have to devote to your project. You will also find that the finished size of the floorcloth may be a determining factor in your selection. Quick Start TipsFor the beginner floorcloth artist, we recommend the Fredrix® Floorcloth Canvas (below), which is double acrylic primed on the top surface and also primed on the back to improve its ability to lay flat, or Fredrix® Primed Cotton Roll Canvas (below), which is double primed on one side only. Fredrix® Floorcloth Canvas is an extra heavy 12oz. cotton, however, it is double acrylic primed on one side for a smooth surface and single primed on the reverse side for extra body and stiffness. Available in half-circles, 2'x3' mats, Christmas Tree skirts, and in rolls up to 70" wide 6 yards long. This would be suitable for any floorcloth and allows the artist to skip the priming and the hemming step and immediately create a painted rug. Available at most fine art stores or arts and crafts stores.
Fredrix® Primed Cotton Roll Canvas is available in a broad range of textures and weights. The Fredrix® Dixie 123, one of Kathy's favorites and the material recommended in floorcloth preparation, is a very heavy cotton with substantial texture. It has been double acrylic primed on one side, so you can skip the priming step. The Dixie 123 is an excellent choice for floorcloths (comparable to the 12 ounce unprimed canvas) and comes in widths up to 144". Available in most art stores.
Christmas Tree Skirt 36" circle pre-cut to fit around Christmas tree base.

Advanced TipsFredrix® Unprimed Cotton Roll Canvas is available in heavy 10 or 12-ounces and comes in a variety of widths from 48" to 144". Generally the 12-ounce is the better choice for durability and appearance. Buying unprimed canvas will usually save you money and allow you to prime to your own specifications, but you will have to purchase a brush(es), acrylic gesso and take the time to apply one or more coats. For more information about priming, refer to The Complete Book of Floorcloths.
Fredrix® Gesso Brushes - Fine tapered nylon. Ideal for spreading acrylic gesso. Outlasts bristle brushes.
